These are software solutions that are installed on the physical desktop computer or laptop. They do not need internet access to function and are usually connected to a database where it retrieves, saves and processes data. There are two types of desktop applications.
1. Standalone Systems These are for businesses that have only one PC/laptop. The software and database will both be installed on this stand alone PC/laptop. No network is required for this software to run.
2. Networked Systems These are for businesses that have more than one PC/Laptop. The software and database can be installed on a central PC, from where all other PCs connected to the network will run the software. Alternatively, the software can be installed on each PC and they will all access one central database located somewhere on the network. A network connection is required for this solution to enable all PCs to talk to each other.
